Niceville Storefront Lock works on aluminium commercial doors — the glass-and-metal entrances on shops, offices, clinics and units around Niceville and Valparaiso. It is a narrow speciality on purpose. These doors are not scaled-up house doors. They are a different construction with different hardware, different failure modes, and a set of rules about escape that residential doors never have to think about.

What a narrow-stile aluminium door actually is
The stile is the vertical member at the edge of the door. On a commercial glass door it is an aluminium extrusion, and the whole design philosophy is to make it as slim as possible so there is more glass and less frame. Narrow stile means very little metal to work with — often only a couple of inches of width to hold a lock, a latch and a cylinder.
That single constraint drives everything. It is why these doors use hardware you will never see on a house: the lock case has to fit inside a hollow extrusion barely wider than your thumb. It is why you cannot simply fit a residential deadbolt to one. And it is why hardware selection is a matter of matching the exact stile width and the existing cut-outs, rather than picking whatever looks right.
The door also hangs differently. Instead of butt hinges it usually swings on pivots, top and bottom, or on a continuous hinge running the full height. The whole weight of a glass door is carried on a bottom pivot the size of a coin.
Mortise cylinders and rim cylinders — know which one you have
This is the distinction that causes the most confusion, and it is worth being clear about because it decides what can be fitted and what a replacement will cost.
A mortise cylinder is threaded, like a bolt. It screws into a threaded hole in the lock case and is held by a set screw in the edge of the door. On the back is a cam — a flat metal tab that rotates when the key turns and physically drives the lock's mechanism. Mortise cylinders come in different lengths and, critically, with different cam shapes and orientations. The cam has to match the lock it is driving. A cylinder that fits the hole perfectly and has the wrong cam will turn freely and do nothing, which is exactly what people describe when they say “the key turns but nothing happens”.
A rim cylinder is not threaded. It passes through the door and is held from behind by a mounting plate and two long screws, with a flat tailpiece — a metal strip — extending backwards to operate the device on the inside face. Rim cylinders are what you find driving exit devices and surface-mounted night latches. The tailpiece has to be the right length and clocked to the right angle; too long and it bottoms out, too short and it will not engage.
Both types are usually replaceable without touching the lock itself, which is the good news. A worn or seized cylinder on an otherwise sound door is normally a cylinder job, not a door job. Getting the length, the cam or tailpiece, and the finish right is the part that requires knowing what you are looking at.
Deadlatches and hookbolts: what is holding your door
The narrow-stile deadlatch is the standard fitting on single glass doors. It throws a bevelled latch bolt into the frame, and alongside it sits a smaller plunger — the deadlocking pin. When the door is properly closed, that pin rests against the strike and mechanically prevents the main latch from being pushed back. This is the entire reason the door is secure, and it is entirely dependent on alignment. If the door has dropped or the strike has shifted so that the pin falls into the strike opening instead of resting on its face, the deadlocking function is gone. The door will look shut and locked and will not actually be either. It is one of the most common serious faults we find, and it is invisible unless someone checks for it.
The hookbolt is used on sliding doors and on pairs of doors where there is no frame to throw a straight bolt into. Instead of a bolt that pushes out, a curved hook swings out and up, catching behind a keeper so the door cannot be pulled or slid apart. Hookbolts are strong in the direction that matters and completely unforgiving about alignment — the hook has to clear the keeper on the way out and seat behind it. A door that has sagged a few millimetres will have a hook that catches on the lip and either will not throw or will not retract, which strands people.
Pairs of doors add another component: the inactive leaf is normally held by flush bolts top and bottom, and the active leaf latches into it. If someone has stopped throwing the flush bolts because they are stiff, the whole pair is being held by one latch into a leaf that is free to move.
Pivots, thresholds and the doors that sag
Nearly every persistent storefront complaint we attend traces back to geometry rather than to the lock.
The bottom pivot carries the door's weight and lives at floor level, which is where water, grit and cleaning chemicals end up. It wears. As it wears, the whole door drops and rotates slightly, and every millimetre at the pivot is magnified at the latch edge two or three feet away. The symptoms arrive in a familiar order: first the door scuffs the threshold, then it needs a push to latch, then the deadlocking pin stops registering, then one day the hookbolt will not retract and nobody can open the shop.
The top pivot or the closer's spindle holds the door in line. Play there lets the top of the door swing out of plane, which is why some doors latch fine when pushed slowly and bounce when pushed hard.
The threshold matters more than it looks. It carries the bottom pivot's fixings, and if it has lifted, corroded or been dislodged, the pivot is no longer in a fixed relationship with the frame. On coastal buildings, thresholds corrode from below where nobody looks.
The practical point: replacing a lock on a sagged door buys a few weeks. Correcting the pivot and the alignment first, then addressing the lock, is what actually fixes the door. We would rather do it in that order and tell you so.
Egress — the rule that overrides convenience
People must be able to get out. On any door used as an exit from an occupied commercial space, a single motion at the door leaf must release everything holding it, without a key, without special knowledge, and without needing two separate actions. That is the principle behind exit devices, and it is why a push bar releases the latch when you lean on it.
What this rules out in practice, and what we will decline to fit:
- A keyed deadbolt above an exit device that has to be turned separately before the door will open. Two actions, one of them needing a key, on an occupied exit.
- Chains, padlocks or bars across an exit during occupied hours. We understand why they appear — usually after a break-in — but the answer is better hardware, not a chain.
- Anything that makes leaving depend on finding a key. If your staff keep a key in the lock so they can get out, the arrangement is already telling you it is wrong.
There is a legitimate opposite problem: a business that is being propped open or entered outside hours needs real security. That is solvable with hardware that locks from outside while remaining free from inside — which is precisely what commercial exit hardware is designed to do. The correct move is almost never to add something that impedes getting out.
Two related items we check on every visit. First, whether the exit device actually retracts the latch fully — worn devices drag. Second, whether the door has been dogged, that is, held in a released state so it pushes open freely, and then left dogged overnight, which some businesses do accidentally and then wonder how someone got in.
Commercial rekeys and key control
Commercial rekeying is a different exercise from residential, because the question is not only “who has a key” but “who can make one”.
The triggers are predictable: a staff member leaving on bad terms, a contractor who had access during a fit-out, a key that has gone missing, a change of tenant, or the discovery that nobody can account for how many keys exist. That last one is the most common and the most quietly dangerous.
On a typical unit there are several openings to think about: the front entrance, a rear or service door, an office or back-of-house door, and often a store or plant room. They rarely need to be on the same key, and putting some thought into which doors share a key is worth doing at the same time as the rekey. A simple arrangement — everyone gets the front, a smaller group gets the back, one or two get the office — costs the same to set up and gives you something you can actually manage.
Then there is key control, which is the part most businesses skip. An ordinary key blank can be duplicated anywhere by anyone holding the key. Restricted keyways use blanks that are not generally available, so copies cannot casually be made, and duplication is tied to an authorisation record. For a business where staff turn over, that is the difference between rekeying every time someone leaves and simply collecting the key back with confidence.
Practical habits worth adopting: keep a written record of which key opens what and who holds it, stamp or tag keys with a code rather than the door's name, collect keys as part of the leaving process rather than afterwards, and rekey rather than replace where the hardware is sound.
The faults we are called to most
- Key turns but nothing moves. Usually a cam or tailpiece problem, a set screw that has backed out, or a cylinder that has come loose in its hole.
- Door will not latch. Alignment first, then the strike, then the latch itself. The deadlocking pin is the thing to check while you are there.
- Hookbolt will not throw or retract. Nearly always the door has moved relative to the keeper.
- Cylinder stiff or seized. Coastal air in a keyway that faces the weather. Dry lubricant, not oil, and often a replacement if it has gone far.
- Exit device rattles or does not release cleanly. Worn internals or a device fighting a misaligned strike.
- Door scuffs the floor. Bottom pivot wear. Fix the pivot, not the lock.
Common questions
No. There is not enough metal in a narrow stile to take one, and on an occupied exit a separate keyed deadbolt is the wrong arrangement anyway. There is proper hardware for these doors that does the job correctly.
The cylinder has almost certainly lost its connection to the lock — a loose or wrong cam, a tailpiece out of engagement, or a set screw that has vibrated out. It is usually a small fix.
Rarely. On most aluminium doors the cylinder is a separate component and can be re-keyed or swapped while the lock case stays where it is.
That is a sagged door telling you the bottom pivot is worn. It will get worse, and at some point it will strand you outside or inside. Have the pivot dealt with rather than working around it.
Not on an occupied exit, and we will not fit anything that has to be removed before people can leave. Where a premises genuinely needs to be secured out of hours, there is hardware that does it without compromising escape.
Rekey the cylinders, and if duplication is the underlying worry, move to a restricted keyway so copies cannot be cut without authorisation.
